Coffee mugs and tumblers are both types of cups for drinking beverages, although they have the same sort of function, they are indeed very different and have very different functions and attributes. If you never heard of a tumbler or curious as to what you've never been able to know the difference between a tumbler and a regular coffee mug. I've listed some key details below which will give you an overview and hopefully maybe offer you some perspective on what mug choice is best for you.

1. What is a Tumbler?

Firstly, let's address the million dollar question; what is a tumbler? A tumbler is an insulated cup or mug that is used for drinking on the go. Unlike traditional coffee mugs these are commonly used for carrying your favourite cold beverages outside whether you are going travelling, walking or commuting to the office.

2. What is a Coffee Mug?

Coffee mugs on the other hand are generally better at handling higher temperatures and they're normally only used indoors like in the office or at home. Typically, coffee mugs are used in hospitality such as cafes and resturants unlike tumblers.

3. Main Differences

Now lets, look at some defining features that differ between a tumbler and a coffee mug.

3.1 Size & Material

Regular Coffee mugs usually have a capacity of 240-350 ml (8-12 oz) while tumblers on average are 500 ml (16oz) but can be as large as 1L (36 oz). The larger capacity size allows for tumblers to carry more liquid when outside. Tumblers generally are wider at the top and more narrow at the bottom. They're usally made of BPA free plastic while coffee mugs are made of ceramic.

3.2 Features

Since coffee mugs are made of ceramic it can retain higher temperatures and wont melt when in contact with hot liquids. However, to prevent scalding every mug is accompanied by a handle for raising the mug. Coffee mugs generally hold much more liquid than the standard tea cup but are smaller in size compared to tumblers, travel flasks and thermos flasks. Tumblers on the other hand are handle free, have a push on lid and a space for a straw.

4. Tumblers Advantages and Disadvantages

Tumblers are fantastic for insulating drinks when out travelling. They're a new trendy type of cup that not only keeps us hydrated but its better for the environment as its reusable. They'yre stylish in appearance and can be customised. The ability to customise your own makes giving a branded tumbler the perfect corporate gift. One major disadvantage of tumblers is that they are not leak proof. Hence, spillages are occurent if you drop your tumbler mug.

5. Coffee Mugs Advantages and Disadvantages

Coffee mugs are far more common than tumblers and are typically found in most households and offices. They're microwave safe and they're very cheap. Like, tumblers, coffee mugs are easy to customise but they're alot cheaper to mass produce which makes them fantastic for business gifts or souvenirs. The disadvantages of ceramic mugs are that if they are not handled carefully they can scald you if you touch the face of the mug when hot liquid is inside and ceramic mugs can also chip, or break very easily.

6. Overall, what's the best option?

Both coffee mugs and tumblers have their own purpose. For those staying at home or working in the office, coffee mugs are suited to this environment. Meanwhile, tumblers are more suitable for going outside when drinking your favourite cold drink to stay hydrated. For businesses, both coffee mugs and tumblers are easily designable and customisable with today's technology. They make the perfect corporate gift idea for companies who are looking to advertise and market their company logo to their employees and potential customers.
